It is with great sadness that we share news of the death of Michael Ferriday.
Michael served our predecessor Telford United with great distinction and diligence as club secretary, administering the club during what was possibly its greatest era, in the 1980s.
Michael’s attention to detail ensured the smooth running of the club’s football operations, working alongside manager Stan Storton at Telford United achieved notable successes in the FA Trophy and FA Cup.
The legacy of that generation lives on today. The club’s successes introduced a new generation of supporters to their local side; whilst the likes of Eddie Hogan, John Alcock and Antone Joseph were the ones capturing the imagination, anyone who has ever been involved in putting eleven players onto the field knows that there is a team behind the team.
The highest level of praise given to referees by spectators is to say that they went unnoticed, and the same applies to club officials such as Michael. He understood that being a club secretary is a hugely necessary role, but is one where the better the job you do, the less noticeable you are.
We noticed Michael’s contribution, and we valued it hugely.
He was known more commonly as Mick to his many football friends; born in 1946, he was 78 years old when he passed away on 3rd June 2024 at the Severn Hospice, having been predeceased by his wife Susan, to whom he was married for 26 years.
In keeping with Michael’s devotion to the club, he held his wedding celebration and the club and a suite in The West Stand still bears his name.
We send our sincere condolences and best wishes to his stepdaughters Karen and Louise,
Michael was a huge friend of this club and still enjoyed attending games, chatting warmly with friends and sharing his memories of times past.
His funeral will take place at 3.30 pm on 25th June at Telford Crematorium, and all who knew Michael are welcome to attend. This will be followed by an invitation to join Michael’s family and friends for some light refreshments and to commemorate and celebrate his life and immeasurable contribution to the club. Appropriately, this will take place in Win’s Bar at the football club from 4.30 pm to 6.30 pm.
Thank you, Michael, and rest in peace.
