We are happy to confirm the signing of George Burroughs.
George will return to the Bucks following his loan spell with us in the 2022/23 season.
The 21-year-old defender agreed to terms with the club over the weekend, having played the entirety of our final pre-season fixture against Tamworth FC.
George displayed his versatility in that game, starting at right-back but switching to partner Sam Whittall in the centre of defence. His ability to play in a number of positions was one of the factors that appealed to manager Kevin Wilkin:
“Yeah, I’m pleased to get him on board. He’s 21 years old now, and was with us probably eighteen months ago, and I think the thing that George needs to do now is play some consistent games. He’s got a nice profile; he’s strengthened up, and I’m looking forward to working with him.”
George was with his previous parent club, Coventry City, when he joined the Bucks in September 2022 under previous manager Paul Carden. He remained on loan when Wilkin himself took the reins barely a month later.
Kevin acknowledged that the turbulence around the club at the time, along with an injury, contributed to the Bucks’ fans perhaps not seeing the best of George:
“It was really a stop-start time for us as a club and stop-start for him as a player; he got injured, and he tried to play through it, and it was more severe than that, meaning he had to take himself out of the firing line for a bit. He didn’t play so much last season (at Altrincham), but hopefully, this is a platform for him to kick on and establish himself as a player.”
The Bucks were one of several Southern Premier Central clubs eager to add George to their squad; however, the familiarity of the SEAH Stadium helped in bringing George on board as a Buck, although the atmosphere around the club has changed markedly, something he recognised:
“I’m really happy to be here again, and it’s definitely a more positive feeling around the club. I’m looking forward to contributing, hopefully to a promotion.”
George will join his new Bucks colleagues at training on Thursday evening, ahead of the Bucks’ season opener at Biggleswade Town on Saturday, August 10th.
Welcome (back) to the Bucks, George!
