Bedford Town
2 v 3
AFC Telford
Match Review
The Bucks twice came from behind to earn a 3-2 win and all three points at Bedford, which moves Wilkin’s men up to 2nd in the table.
The Bucks weren’t at their best in what was a fairly even first half, but a half that the Eagles shaded thanks to Ryan Blake’s well-placed finish. After Jordan Piggott couldn’t clear his lines, the ball fell to Blake who curled an effort past Brandon Hall and in off the post to give Bedford the lead in the 17th minute. The remainder of the half saw both sides push and probe for a way through without any real success, and so it remained 1-0 to the Eagles at the break.
But after half time, the Bucks were much improved and made a fast start to the second period. Jimmy Armson and Kyle Storer both went close before Ricardo Dinanga levelled for the Bucks in the 50th minute; the Bucks attacker lifting a shot across Adam Harrison that went all the way through and into the far corner.
The Bucks were playing with a lot more energy and drive and looked the more likely side, but it was Bedford who scored next. In the 68th minute, the Eagles dangerman Leon Lobjoit notched his 14th league goal of the season, firing home from 12 yards after the Bucks failed to deal with a long throw into the box.
But Wilkin’s men didn’t let the setback affect them, and the Bucks kept knocking on the door; a door which was opened by Matty Stenson. Some quick interplay by the Bucks opened up the space for the Telford top scorer, and Stenson hit a low shot under Harrison to draw the Bucks level in the 76th minute. And Stenson was at it again in the 85th minute, as he soared above the Eagles’ defence to power home a header at the near post to make it 3-2 to the Bucks.
Things might have got even better for the Bucks right at the death, but Remi Walker’s shot crashed against the bar before Ellis Brown’s goalbound effort on the rebound was inadvertedly blocked by Stenson.
In the end, the Bucks were worthy of the three points, but they had to dig deep to overcome a dangerous Bedford side who were very much in the game throughout. After some frustrating times in recent weeks, it was pleasing to see Wilkin’s men come up trumps in key moments today. The win sees the Bucks climb above the Eagles and into 2nd place, just two points behind leaders Kettering.
