Match Review

The Bucks moved to the top of the table with a resounding 6-2 win over high flyers Bedford Town.

Kevin Wilkin’s men started brightly, fashioning a good chance for Ellis Brown in the opening 90 seconds, only for the ball to be blocked behind for a corner.

But it was the visitors who opened the scoring against the run of play in the 18th minute. The Eagles won a debatable freekick on the Bucks’ left, and from the resulting ball in Sydney Ibie rose highest to nod the ball back across goal, with Huw Dawson on hand to turn the ball home from close range.

The SEAH Stadium was flat, but after something of a lull in the action the Bucks suddenly sprung into life with four goals in eight minutes. The leveller came in the 31st minute when Bedford failed to deal with Jordan Cranston’s ball into the box, and Matty Stenson fired in off the post. And Stenson doubled his and the Bucks’ tally just moments later. A simple ball over the top in the 34th minute caught the Eagles out, and Stenson’s shot went through goalkeeper Jameson Horlick and just about crept over the line.

And the goals kept coming. First, Orrin Pendley headed home from Cranston’s corner in the 38th minute, before Jimmy Armson repeated the trick in 40th minute, heading home from a Cranston freekick. It might have got even better for the Bucks right on half time, but Horlick did well to turn the ball off the line after yet another dangerous Cranston corner. So, the Bucks went into the break 4-1 up.

The second period began much as the first had ended, as the Bucks extended their lead further still. Max Brogan bagged his first goal for the club with a well struck freekick in the 53rd minute, while Armson notched his second goal of the game with a fine low finish three minutes later.

The Eagles managed to nab a goal back in the 63rd minute, when Dawson once again fired home from close range following a freekick. But the Bucks were comfortable and came close to adding more goals. Ellis Brown was in particularly fine form, and he was among those who went close to adding a seventh for the Bucks. There weren’t any further goals in the end though, and it finished 6-2 to the Bucks.

The win sees the Bucks knock the Eagles off their perch at the top of the table, with Wilkin’s men now two points clear of the chasing pack.
