"Bucks face freefalling Canaries"
Match Date : March 23rd, 2024 3:00 pm
Competition : Southern League Premier Central
Ground : Top Field
Kick Off : 15:00
The Bucks will head to Hertfordshire this Saturday to take on freefalling Hitchin Town.
It was 3rd plays 4th when the sides played out a goalless draw at the New Bucks Head back in November, but the Canaries form has fallen off a cliff since then. Hitchin have lost 14 of their 17 subsequent games, in fact, and they are currently on an 12-match losing run. What’s more, that run has included defeats to fellow relegation-threatened sides Berkhamsted, Long Eaton, Sudbury and Kettering.
With Hitchin unexpectedly tumbling into a relegation battle, manager Mark Burke resigned at the start of March having been in charge at Top Field for 11 years. Burke, who first joined the club as a player in 1985, remains with the club as company secretary and head of community activities, while Michael Jones takes the reins on an interim basis.
The Canaries squad remains much the same as the one that visited the New Bucks Head earlier in the season. Eight of Hitchin’s side who started their last game at Sudbury were also in the starting eleven when they came to Telford, which makes their collapse all the more strange. Top scorer Finley Wilkinson started the season in fine form with 12 goals and five assists, but he’s only scored once since we met in November.
The Bucks have tended not to fare too well when venturing out to the east of the Midlands, but Kevin Wilkin’s men did record a win on their other visit to Hertfordshire this season – a 1-0 win at Berkhamsted. The Bucks have picked up 18 points from the last 21, too, and will be looking for three more valuable points this weekend.
