"Bucks aiming to take the sting out of the Bees"

Match Date : February 1st, 2025 3:00 pm
Competition : Southern League Premier Central
Ground : New Bucks Head
Kick Off : 15:00

The Bucks face more promotion hopefuls at the SEAH Stadium this Saturday, when Harborough Town will be the visitors.

The Bees finished 3rd in last season’s Northern Premier League Division One Midlands, four points behind champions Spalding United, before winning the playoffs to seal promotion. And Harborough have seamlessly made the step up and find themselves once again challenging at the top of the table.

Mitch Austin’s side are currently 6th in the table, thanks in part to their fine recent form. A late winner for Stourbridge last Saturday saw the Bees fall to a first defeat since Christmas, but Town had picked up 19 points from the previous 21 on offer – a run the included wins over Kettering, Leiston and Stamford.

Harborough’s success has largely been based on a watertight defence. The Bees conceded just 24 goals in 38 games last season, while they currently have the fourth-best defence in the league this time around. And it is a trio of local lads who are at the heart of Harborough’s defensive solidity. Between them, keeper Elliott Taylor, full back Josh Walsh and centre back and captain, Ben Williams, have played over 750 games for the club.

At the other end, Ben Stephen is the Bees’ top scorer in the league, with 12 goals to his name. Stephens also scored three important winning goals during Town’s run to the Second Round of the FA Cup, where Town were eventually knocked out after extra time by League One Reading. The cup run is perhaps one of the reasons why the Bees were able to recently bring in Stamford captain Rob Morgan to help with their promotion push.

The Bees tend to perform better on home soil than on the road, although they’ve only lost four away league games, so they are still a hard side to put away. The Bucks did do just that earlier in the season though, as Kevin Wilkin’s men put in a resolute performance to earn a hard fought 2-1 win at Harborough earlier this season. And another three points this Saturday would help cement the Bucks’ promotion credentials.
