The Bucks are back in action on home soil on Tuesday night, when Bromsgrove Sporting will be the visitors to the SEAH Stadium.
Sporting struggled at the wrong end of the table last season, in what was a very inconsistent campaign for the Worcestershire club. The Rouslers ultimately finished just five points above the drop in 17th.
Following Tim Flowers’ short stint as interim manager, Sporting appointed Paul Smith as their new permanent boss as soon as the season ended. And Smith, who started the last campaign as manager of Halesowen, is no stranger to the Victoria Ground having managed the Rouslers between 2014 and 2018.
Smith has reshaped his Sporting squad over the summer with a number of new additions. Among the new faces are former Buck George Forsyth, midfielder Reece King (Stourbridge via Malvern Town), and attackers Jamie Meddows (Stourport Swifts), Kieran Cook (Coalville) and erstwhile BBC Shropshire pundit Theo Robinson (Gloucester City). It’s young forward Charlie Wragg who has impressed the most so far, though. The loanee from Walsall has hit three goals so far this term and bagged Bromsgrove’s player of the month for August. Former Buck Luke Rowe captains the side.
Despite the new signings, Sporting have continued to be consistently inconsistent. Three wins and three defeats see the Rouslers sit 10th after six games.
Bromsgrove put in a resolute performance to earn themselves a point in a goalless draw at the New Bucks Head on New Year’s Day, while Jared Hodgkiss’ late header saw Kevin Wilkin’s men claim a 2-1 win at the Victoria Ground in April.
The Bucks held out against a determined Lowestoft side to claim a hard-earned 2-1 in Suffolk and Saturday. That means Wilkin’s men have now picked up four league wins in a row, and a fifth successive victory could see the Bucks move to the very top of the early season table.
