Telford United had a formidable record in the FA Trophy. The clubs record of five appearances in the final remains unequalled and only Scarborough and Woking can match the three occasions the trophy has been lifted by the Bucks. Telford appeared in the first ever FA Trophy final at Wembley in 1970, losing 2-0 to Macclesfield Town, but returned the following year to bring the trophy back to the Bucks Head.
AFC Telford United’s best performances in the competition to date came in reaching the semi final stage in the 2008/09 and 2018/19 seasons. In 2008/09, Rob Smith’s side defeated Gainsborough Trinity, Boston United, Hayes & Yeading United, Kettering Town and Southport before a 4-1 aggregate defeat by York City. In 2018/19, Gavin Cowan’s side defeated Darlington, Farsley Celtic, Hartlepool United, Spennymoor Town and Solihull Moors before a 3-1 aggregate defeat by Leyton Orient.
1970 Telford 0-2 Macclesfield Town
1971 Telford 3-2 Hillingdon Borough
1983 Telford 2-1 Northwich Victoria
1988 Telford 0-0 Enfield Town
Telford 2-3 Enfield Town (replay)
1989 Telford 1-0 Macclesfield Town
Between 1982 and 1992, Telford United carved out a fierce reputation as FA Cup giantkillers, winning no fewer than eleven ties against Football League sides and taking a further four to replays as they repeatedly upset the odds.
Their victories were not always back to wall jobs either. The aggressive attacking teams assembled by manager Stan Storton tore into their better known opponents, scoring three goals against Stockport County, Northampton Town, Darlington and Burnley and even more impressively; hitting four at Spotland (Rochdale) and Deepdale (Preston North End).
Telford became one of only ten non-league teams to reach the Fifth Round in 1985, where they came up against the FA Cup holders and eventual Champions of England that season, Everton at Goodison Park. Stortons team battled bravely for an hour before the quality of Everton shone through and goals from Peter Reid, Trevor Steven and Kevin Sheedy gave the hosts a 3-0 victory. The 11,000 supporters from Telford remains the largest ever away following in the competition’s history.
The 2003/04 season saw a return of the giantkillers, a Christian Moore hat-trick gave Telford a 3-0 win over Brentford set up a Third-Round trip to Gresty Road to face Crewe Alexandra, where a 2nd minute Lee Mills header was enough to give Telford a 1-0 win. With Crewe sitting 10th in the Championship table at the time, this was statistically the clubs biggest FA Cup upset.
Since the reformation of the football club, AFC Telford United have not yet been able to recapture the heroics of yesteryear, reaching the First Round on just five occasions. In the First Round of 2008, it took a last gasp equaliser from Southend United to prevent another famous win after two Jon Adams strikes had given Telford a 2-1 lead against their League One opponents. Southend won the replay 2-0 at Roots Hall.
2014/15 brought the reformed clubs best FA Cup performance to date, reaching the Second Round where they faced Bristol City, the highest ranked team in the competition at the time. But it would again be late heartbreak for the Bucks, as after a valiant defensive display the Robins would score the only goal of the game in stoppage time.
