AFC Telford Ladies hosted local rivals Shrewsbury Town for their opening league game after moving into the West Midlands Women’s North League. Shrewsbury would possess a tricky opening fixture with the Bucks looking to gain revenge after the visitors dumped them out the Shropshire Cup last season.
Manager Sean Evans handed league debuts to three of his new signings, Kim Winton, Katie Doster and Nicola Durnall; all of which have previously featured for Salop. Their was also a full debut for Under 18s defender Macey Turvey who impressed in her appearance against Kidderminster in the FA Cup. Just 3 minutes were on the clock when the Bucks opened the scoring. Nicola Durnall was given a chance to whip the ball into the box from the sideline. However, she caught the keeper off guard beating her all ends up.
Just two minutes later the lead was doubled as Caitlyn Smith picked the ball up on half way before her raking diagonal ball picked out Maddie Jones. Jones kept her composure to fire low past the keeper and put the Bucks in control. 12 minutes in and the home side were in dreamland with almost a carbon copy of the first. It was Durnall once again who caught the keeper out with a free kick after a handball from the Shrewsbury left back 25 yards out.
After a lengthy stoppage due to an injury to the Shrewsbury keeper who was replaced, the Bucks made it four on the half hour mark, this time from the spot. A bouncing ball in the box came off a Shrewsbury hand. Up stepped a Durnall to grab her third and Telford’s fourth.
HALF TIME: AFC TELFORD 4 SHREWSBURY TOWN 0
After a sloppy end to the first half, the Bucks were looking to raise their standards in the second half and put the gloss on a superb opening day. It was no surprise that the Bucks grabbed a quick fire double courtesy of the ever prolific Katie Doster. On 50 minutes she beat the offside trap to finish past the despairing dive of the keeper before catching the keeper out just 2 minutes later with an early strike.
The Bucks will be disappointed to allow Shrewsbury two goals in the final quarter of the game but it failed to take the gloss off a superb and satisfying victory. Next up a trip to face Port Vale Development before entertaining Florence at Telford College on the 23rd September 2pm ko.
