Wolves United Away - AFC Telford United Ladies

Wolves United Away... Wolves United Away... Wolves United Away

Fresh from last weeks victory at home to West Brom United, the AFC Telford Ladies were back on the road as they made the short trip to face Wolverhampton United in a top of the table clash. The hosts sat just 3 points behind the Bucks and were looking to end the perfect record held by the ladies.

The Bucks shuffled the pack for this game with Hamer, Jem Smith, Poole and debutant  Jones coming in for Arrowsmith (Unavailable), Teare (Injured), McShane and Cooke who dropped to the bench. It was a nervy opening to the game with both sides looking to get a foothold on a very heavy and bobbly surface. The hosts had the first chance of the game from a free kick but it failed to trouble Carter in the Telford goal sailing over.

The first notable chance of the game came after 15 minutes when Caitlyn Smith found herself in 1v1. However the tracking Wolves defender put in a superb last ditch tackle to keep the scores level and deny Smith. We would only have to wait 4 more minutes for the opening goal of the game, and what a strike it was. After the ball pin-balled around in the box, it popped out to Darel Poole who unleashed an unstoppable drive from 25 yards past the Wolves keeper. It was hoped the goal would settle the Bucks down but this wasn't to be the case as the scrappy encounter continued. A key moment followed just after the half hour point as Wolves were denied an equaliser via an offside. A few tasty challenges from both sides followed to raise the temperature of the game on a cold afternoon in Wolverhampton.

On 37 minutes the Bucks grabbed control of the game and it was the lively winger Kayleigh Harrison who got the goal. After her initial shot was well saved by the keeper she was in hand to put the ball in. A well deserved second for the Bucks with the hosts yet to register a shot on target. That's the way it stayed as the sides headed in the break.

HALF TIME: Wolverhampton United 0 AFC Telford Ladies 2

The next goal in this game would be crucial. If the Bucks grabbed it, it would be a case of how many they could score but if the hosts got one back it would be a nervous end to the game. The home side started the brightest forcing 4 successive corners in the first few minutes but couldn't create an opening. A close call for the Bucks on the hour as a clearance out the box struck the Wolves striker but narrowly drifted wide. However, just two minutes the home side did get on the scoresheet from the spot after a foul from Hamer. Carter got a hand to the penalty but the power was too much. Game On!

With 20 minutes to go, the Bucks should of had a third but somehow the ball stayed out after a number of chances in the bog of a goalmouth. Just two minutes later the two goal cushion was restored. Fran Scott picked up the ball on the left flank before beating her marker for pace, she cut inside before unleashing a right footed strike past the keeper via the crossbar. Just two minutes later the game as a contest was over as bravery in the air from Beth Cooke played in Harrison who fired one across the keeper in off the post. 4 minutes to go and the hosts got another back after a pass back evaded Carter courtesy of a massive bobble leaving the Wolves striker with a simple tap in. Their was still time for Harper to miss from the spot striking the crossbar but that didn't change the outcome as the Bucks made it 10 wins out of 10 opening up a 6 point lead at the top the league.

A great win for the Bucks in very tough conditions but ugly wins win you the league and this was certainly one. It's a break from league action next weekend as they travel to face Kewford Eagles in the next round of the Cup.
