Bucks and Boro do battle on Easter Monday
AFC Telford United vs Nuneaton Town
Vanarama National League North
Monday 17th April 2017, 3pm kick-off
Telford complete this weekend’s double-header with an Easter Monday clash against Nuneaton Town at the New Bucks Head.
Nuneaton missed out on the playoffs by a single point last season, but a slow start to the current campaign scuppered any hopes of a similar showing this time around. Boro were bottom when the Bucks headed to Liberty Way at the end of August – a game that finished 1-1 – and had only recorded three league wins by the end of November.
That led the Warwickshire club to dispense with the services of manager Kevin Wilson, as Tommy Wright took the reins in his place. Given less than 24 hours to prepare for his game in charge, Wright saw his side go down 3-0 away at FC United, but he has since overseen a remarkable recovery at the club.
Eight straight wins in all competitions followed, as Boro began to climb the table. A cluster of defeats at the end of January and into February slowed their charge, but Wright’s side have since lost just two of their last ten games.
Ashley Chambers has been central to Nunny’s success in recent weeks. The forward has 7 goals in 11 games since arriving on loan from Grimsby Town in February. Former Buck Greg Mills is another new addition at Liberty Way, having made a permanent switch from Tamworth in January. Mills previously excelled under Wright’s management at Corby Town, where the pair won the Southern Premier League title in 2014/15.
The recent arrivals have done much to lessen the loss of Joe Ironside – who left to join Kidderminster Harriers at the end of March – with Mills on hand to help Boro beat Harrogate Town on Saturday, when he netted the opener in a 2-1 win.
The Bucks also bagged a positive result in the opening round of Easter fixtures. A 1-1 draw at playoff chasing Stockport County inched Rob Smith’s side closer to making safety certain. A similar scoreline on Monday should see the Bucks guarantee a place in next season’s National North.
