FA Cup History

Between 1982 and 1992, Telford United carved out a fierce reputation as FA Cup giantkillers, winning no fewer than eleven ties against Football League sides and taking a further four to replays as they repeatedly upset the odds.

There victories were not always back to wall jobs either. The aggressive attacking teams assembled by manager Stan Storton tore into their better known opponents, scoring three goals against Stockport County, Northampton Town, Darlington and Burnley and even more impressively; hitting four at Spotland (Rochdale) and Deepdale (Preston North End).

In 1985, Telford become one of only nine non-league teams to reach the Fifth Round, where they came up against the FA Cup holders and eventual Champions of England that season, Everton at Goodison Park. Stortons team battled bravely for an hour before the quality of Everton shone through and goals from Peter Reid, Trevor Steven and Kevin Sheedy gave the hosts a 3-0 victory. The 11,000 supporters from Telford remains the largest ever away following in the competitions history.

The 2003/04 season saw a return of the giantkillers, a Christian Moore hat-trick gave Telford a 3-0 win over Brentford set up a Third Round trip to Gresty Road to face Crewe Alexandra, where a 2nd minute Lee Mills header was enough to give Telford a 1-0 win. With Crewe sitting 10th in the Championship table at the time, this was statistically the clubs biggest FA Cup upset.

Since the reformation of the football club, AFC Telford United have not yet been able to recapture the heroics of yesteryear, although it took a last gasp equaliser from Southend United in 2008 to prevent another famous win after two Jon Adams strikes had given Telford a 2-1 lead. Southend won the replay 2-0 at Roots Hall.
